Minneapolis St. Paul Among Tops For 2012 Remodeling

Construction market watchers are predicting a rebound in remodeling projects across the country this year in general, and in the Minneapolis St. Paul region in particular.

That’s the word from Hanley Wood’s Remodeling magazine, which has released its ranking of the top 20 market areas in the country for remodeling activity in 2012, the first step in following up its inaugural Top 100 Markets list from last year.

The list indicates that only Houston will exceed the Minneapolis St. Paul metro area for remodeling activity for in the coming year. The list combines permit activity, household surveys and demographic and general economic data to compile the list which indexes activity against the decade-high mark of 2007.

The magazine cites the Twin Cities’ corporate and medical technology base, it’s educated workforce and lower-than-average unemployment in predicting a 6% rise in the number of remodeling projects.

In a separate report, Remodeling magazine compiles ongoing statistics about the cost recouped by remodeling projects, including kitchen remodels, master suite additions and living room addition.

Fiber Cement v. Fiberglass Siding Cost Comparison

Comparing the price of fiber cement siding to fiberglass siding requires understanding the benefits of both.

Profile view of Apex fiberglass and fiber cement siding. Note that the thinner, lighter fiberglass is more durable than the fiber cement and its unique design and installation system prevents water infiltration.

Fiber cement siding came into the Minneapolis St. Paul market more than 15 years ago as an alternative to cedar wood siding and masonite. It has taken hold given that it’s more durable and longer lasting than those and is comparable in price.

Given that advantage, fiber cement siding has become the most used high-end siding in the Twin Cities market.

But it now has an emerging competitor, fiberglass siding from Apex. While the Apex fiberglass siding system currently costs more versus fiber cement siding, there are financial and maintenance advantages to fiberglass siding that could be considered well worth the investment. For AMEK Construction, though, the road most often traveled by contractors isn’t the one they always take. Consider the Wayzata home of Oscar Rameraiz.

The Rameraiz family had purchased a home knowing that water damage required they replace the stucco siding. They sought an inspection by Certified Moisture Testing, specialists in water damage detection which discovered water damage behind the home’s stucco siding.

CMT recommended the Rameraiz family seek a bid from AMEK Construction. Continue reading Custom Siding Makes Home Stand Out

Fiberglass v. Fiber Cement Siding In Minneapolis/St. Paul

Prior to fiber cement siding coming into the Minneapolis St. Paul market in the mid 1990s, local homeowners generally chose between vinyl, steel, aluminum, wood or stucco siding.

But when James Hardie introduced fiber cement siding into the Twin Cities market for residential use there was a new choice on the premium of siding options. The new siding option came with distinct advantages over its competitors, detailed below.

Apex Fiberglass Siding Installed On Chanhassen HomeNow, 15 years after fiber cement was introduced for residential use it has a new siding competitor at the high end of the market. Apex fiberglass siding is being introduced into the Minneapolis St. Paul market, and AMEK Construction is proud to be among the early installers.

This new siding system adds water-resistant functionality and a new level of durability to siding options, according to Paul Schmidt, who leads AMEK’s exterior siding team.

Chanhassen Home First In State To Replace Leaking Stucco With New Fiberglass Siding

A Chanhassen, Minn., home is among the first homes in the state to be protected by a revolutionary new siding made from fiberglass.

The home is one of only a half-dozen installations in Minnesota using Apex Siding, affiliated with Marvin, and is the first stucco-replacement project to be completed in the state. The replacement siding was installed as part of a larger structural renovation to repair damage caused by water infiltrating the home’s stucco exterior.

The project was designed, managed and constructed by AMEK Custom Builders of Bloomington.

The homeowners contacted AMEK after watching the company repair decaying framing on a nearby home also caused by water getting behind stucco siding. That homeowner chose cement-fiber for replacement siding

“The homeowners were interested in using James Hardie fiber cement siding like their neighbor,” said Paul Schmidt, AMEK’s siding specialist and project manager. “We went over all the options with them and after learning all the pros and cons they chose the Apex Siding System.” Continue reading Chanhassen Home First In State To Replace Leaking Stucco With New Fiberglass Siding
